Vegan Air Fried Donuts

RECIPE BELOW!! Ok… who DOESN’T love a hot, melt in your mouth doughnut?! My son has been asking to make our own donuts, so we did! And let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint!!! 🙌🏻👏🏻🤤 🍩

🌱 These are Vegan: egg-free and dairy-free! They’re also air fried to reduce the amount of oil we’re eating, and my goodness it was a win! This is a simple recipe that only requires a little time and love 💕 It’s so fun to do as a family, too!! You can even get creative and use cookie cutters and make various shaped donuts! Whatever you do, it’ll be a blast and taste great!

Unlike some of the most popular vegan donut recipes, I don’t use Apple sauce for egg replacer (it’s too gritty!! We don’t want that). I use aquafaba, which acts as your egg whites and gives you a perfect twin to the non-vegan counterpart donut!

I’m sure these could be deep fried, however I’ve never done it. I would guess deep fry at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 2 min on each side.

Vegan Air Fried Donuts

Vegan Air Fried Donuts

"These are even better than Shipley's!" - My son. AND they're Vegan! Dairy & Egg-free! They're the twin of non-vegan donuts, except air fried. Eat them hot & savor every bite!

Ingredients

Donut Dough
  • 1/2 cup warm water (no warmer than 110F!)
  • 1/4 cup non-dairy milk (no warmer than 110F!)
  • 1 pkg active dry yeast
  • 2 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar + a pinch for yeast mixture
  • 1/4 cup Melted vegan butter (Earth Balance)
  • 2 Tbsp aquafaba, the juice from a can of beans
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Glaze
  • 2 cups Powder sugar
  • 4 Tbsp almond milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Chocolate Glaze Option
  • 1 1/2 cups Powder sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 4 T almond milk
  • 1 t vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. COMBINE WATER, almond milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar In a cup. Set aside to activate about 5 min, until foamy.
  2. IN LARGE BOWL, WHISK TOGETHER DRY INGREDIENTS: flour, sugar, salt.
  3. Make a well In center of flour mixture. Add wet ingredients, and combine with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough is formed. Use your hands to incorporate all flour into a ball.
  4. KNEAD the dough for about 7 min, until the dough is stretchy.
  5. PLACE in greased bowl, COVER with a dish towel, and LET RISE for 1 hour until it’s doubled in size (if it’s not rising, try placing on a running warm dryer).
  6. PUNCH DOWN DOUGH to deflate, then turn out into floured surface. ROLL DOUGH to 1-2” thickness. Use a 1 cup measuring cup or a biscuit cutter to CUT OUT DONUTS, 1 AT A TIME, and place on a cookie sheet.
  7. Gather the scraps, form a ball, then roll out to continue cutting donuts and holes, using all the dough.
  8. COVER & LET RISE about 15 min.
  9. AIR FRY: Grease air fry basket. Place a couple donuts in the basket, not touching. Spray the donuts with oil. Air fry the donuts for 3 min on 350 Fahrenheit, FLIP, then air fry for another 2 min. Let stand for 1-2 min.
  10. *While batch is air frying, make the glaze!* Be sure NO WATER comes into contact with glaze, and that it’s whisked until smooth.
  11. GLAZE the donuts while still warm & place on a wire rack with something underneath to catch glaze drips.
  12. REPEAT until all donuts are cooked & glazed!
  13. DONUT HOLES: Same as donuts, but air fry for 2 min each side.
